TUTORIALS

Tutorial 1

Hermann Dommel (Canada, University of British Columbia, Vancouver)
Ante Sekso Telento (Croatia, Energy Institute Ltd., Zagreb)

This first CIGRÉ Tutorial in Croatia and region will begin with an introduction to subject giving general division of various types of transient phenomena in large electric power systems. The main sources of electromagnetic transients like lightning, switching or nuclear detonations on high altitudes will be shortly reviewed with its main time and frequency domain characteristics. In the introduction will be described approaches to studying electromagnetic transients (generally and with examples from the region). In the second part will be firstly given an overview to computer simulation methods with OHL and cable parameters. Some case studies will be shown like coupling between power lines, inrush current, subsynchronous resonance, switching surges. At the end will be presented some important and selected topics from rich experiences of lecturers.

Tutorial 2

Prabha S. Kundur (Canada, KPSS Inc., Toronto , Ontario)

A comprehensive overview of power system stability problems. Measures that can be used to enhance secure operation of power systems in the new electric power industry environment. The topics that will be covered include: basic concepts, definition and classification of power system stability, physical aspects of the phenomena; examples of major system blackouts caused by different forms of instability; challenges to secure operation of today’s power systems, complex modes of instability, deregulated market environment; major power grid blackouts in 2003 and 2004; factors impacting on power system security; comprehensive approach to secure system operation, risk-based reliability criteria, improved protective relaying, robust power system controls, coordinated emergency controls as a defense against multiple contingencies, on-line security assessment, real-time monitoring and control, widespread use of distributed generation, and reliability management system.

Tutorial 3

Carlo Alberto Nucci (Italy, University of Bologna)
Ivo Uglešić (Croatia, University of Zagreb)

Distribution Systems: Up-to-date models available for the calculation of lightning-induced voltages on distribution lines. Explanation of the mechanism for generation of lightning-induced voltages in cases of both lossless and lossy ground. Sensitivity analysis of H-shaped networks. Comparison with experimental results. Presentation of the author’s procedure for assessing the lightning performance of distribution lines and improvements introduced to the procedure described in IEEE Std. 1410; realistic line configurations and effects of the finite ground conductivity. Influence of protection measures on the mitigation of lightning-induced voltages. Transmission Systems: Lightning protection for both air- and gas-insulated substation. Determining the rating, number and locations of surge arresters in a substation. Calculations of lightning overvoltages inside the substation. Main consideration when installing line surge arresters. Design concepts for line arresters: gaplesstype and external gap-type arrester; principle of operation. Number of arresters for a single- or multicircuit tower according to the installation method. Operational experience and effectiveness of line arresters. Line arrester monitoring systems. Modeling and simulations. Case studies.
