C6 – Active distribution systems and distributed energy resources

Study Committee C6 operates within the Croatian National Committee of CIGRE (HRO CIGRE), following the international CIGRE study-committee taxonomy. Its goal is to enable and promote the advancement of engineering and the international exchange of information and knowledge in its field.

C6 – Active distribution systems and distributed energy resources

Mission

To enable and promote the advancement of engineering and the international exchange of information and knowledge in the field of distribution systems and distributed energy resources (DER). Through the synthesis of contemporary practice and the development of recommendations, to add new value to the existing knowledge in this field.

Scope

Technology, integration and operation of distributed energy resources (DER) and associated active distribution systems. To analyse various approaches and solutions and help different players in distribution systems so that DER has better response and control (active distribution systems that enable customer participation) and to enhance the role of the Distribution System Operator (DSO) and its distribution management system (DMS). Technological area of activity: innovative equipment and systems for the implementation of DER and the development of technology for distribution systems; integration and empowerment of customers; technologies that enable the integration and application of DER; energy storage technologies and multi-purpose technologies, electrification of rural areas and off-grid systems. Distributed generation, from conventional sources (diesel, gas turbines, CHP) to renewable generation (wind and solar), energy storage systems (energy storage batteries, thermal and inertial storage) and demand management (load control and limitation).

Areas of particular focus are:

  • Technologies that enable the integration and application of renewable and distributed energy resources, active network management, micro-grids, virtual power plants, distribution system management (ADMS, DERMS), monitoring and management of DER, aggregation systems, platforms, blockchain applications.
  • Innovative solutions for the development of distribution and DER technology: smart converters and interfaces with power electronics and interconnection equipment applications, MV/LV DC supply systems, modernisation of the distribution system.
  • Storage technologies: development of various storage technologies such as electrochemical energy storage systems, rotational energy storage, accumulator batteries and new storage technologies, hydropower, hydrogen, multi-purpose solutions (with heat storage), energy conversion (electricity-heat, electricity-gas …), electric vehicles.
  • New approaches to configuring new distribution systems for increased reliability and resilience: islanded network of interconnected micro-grids, power exchange between micro-grids.
  • Integration and empowerment of customers: integration and participation in demand management, demand response, load management, smart load, new forms of consumption such as electric vehicles, smart home and the application of smart meters with an impact on distribution systems.
  • Smart cities: integrated distribution system technologies, electricity, development of technologies for management flexibility, information and communication, integration of multi-purpose energy systems.
  • Electrification of rural areas, island power systems and systems and solutions for individual off-grid customers.
